What is a true friendship (什么是真正的友谊)
In the dictionary, friendship is defined as the state of being friends. What are friends? What makes a good friend? To me a friend is someone who cherishes the special moments and memories of life with another person. A friend is a trusorthy panion. Friendship is a relationship which takes time to build. There are many steps and stages to achieving a true friendship. However, one can think building a friendship is like planting a garden.
For many people, planting a garden represents, devotion and leisure. It takes patience to grow a garden, frustrations and hardships are also involved in the process. Firstly the seed is planted. The seed builds the foundation of a strong and stable plant. It has to be taken care of and watered daily. Then the shoots start sprouting, the plant is finally flourishing. One can see day by day the garden maturing. Then one day the garden starts to wilt, its dying. One has to tend to it and have the patience and determination to bring it back to life. It frustrates one to see the insects and predators preying on the beautiful garden that once existed. But hard work and devotion regains the gardens beauty and gives it life again. Soon a shoots blossom a bloom into beautiful flowers. The charm and divine beauty of the garden is a wonderful enlightening sight. Building a friendship has similar characteristics. One meets a person and plants the seed of friendship. The friendship b! uilds and continues to grow stronger. It requires devotion of time and patience to achieve peak munication beeen the o panions. The struggle to keep a solid friendship includes many obstacles and hardships. But promising, devotion and the willingness to endure is bound to payoff in the end. As I once read It takes a long time to grow an old friendship. Friendship has its good and bad times. There es a time when the relationship is just not working. It is preoupied with disagreements and quarrels. It is on the verge of destruction. One must have the patience to deal with such frustrations. The willingness and determination to get the relationship working again e within. Compromising and persistence rebuilds the friendship and is once again reestablished. As I once read Be slow to fall into friendship, but when you are in, continue firm and constant. The friendship is blooming and is finally on its peak. Its great to have a strong and stable relationship which allows the o panions to share the joys and memories of life together. If building a friendship can be pared to planting a garden then perhaps some of its frustrations and problems can be better understood. The true meaning of friendship is achieved by understanding its relativity to planting a garden. A person who builds a friendship as planting a garden can overe the obstacles of it very easily. The symbolism bees clear and precise. Friendship and planting a garden can both be said as give and take. The more effort and persistence put into them the more stronger and everlasting happiness can be acplished

With the dream,we have a direction, with a direction, we were no longer confused. With the dream, there is hope,With hope, we have the strength to fight.
I have a dream: To be a doctor.,because doctor may relieve the pain of patients. May let the human change the health. At the same time, I believed that, those who help others may be able to obtain joyfully. Therefore, I hoped in the near future ,I might be a doctor.

英语演讲——“动物园的价值是什么”
Well, zoos are a place where all kinds of animals are kept and displayed. There can be animals as large as epephants and also animals as small as birds and insects. But what do you think is the most plicated creature on earth?Human beings, right? Sometimes we are so plicated we cannot understand ourselves so zoos privide us a more chance about ourselves through watching other animals' behaviors.I still remember ten years ago I went to the zoo to visit bears.Obviously one bear was itching on its back, but its arms are too short to reach its back, so he found another bear, and they put their backs together, and they were scraching for each other. What a vivid of illustration of cooperation! They taught me a lesson ten years ago, another time I went to see the butterflies, and there is a small opening on the cocoon of the butterfly. And I watched for almost an hour to see the buttrtfly to emerge from the cocoon, and obviously it was struggling, very strenuously and I asked the guide,"Why (do)not you bring a scissor and open the cocoon for it?""No, "he answered,"you don't know.he must experiance such a process of struggling, otherwise it will have a wizened body and shriverled wings.Because the struggling is God's way to force the fluid from butterfly's body to its wings.Oh, I got it! Sometimes struggle(s) are the essential parts of our life! If I want to be as beautiful and suessful as a butterfly, apart from what I have metioned, zoos also play an important role in animal protection and education.(动物园在动物保护,人类受教育方面起著举足轻重的作用)But I think the most important value is that it enhance(s) our understanding of human nature and human virtue.(更重要的是:它加深了我们对人类天性和美德的理解)That's my understanding of the value of zoos, thank you!"

Most of us have been told that "It is better to give than to receive." Most of us assume that the saying emphasizes the "goodness" of giving. However, receiving can be a source of pain as well as pleasure.
Typically people prefer a fair "give and take" in their relationships. Thus, if someone helps you too much, you may feel indebted to that person. Such a feeling of indebtedness is clearly unfortable. Benefits received are aeptable, only if they can be repaid. Beyond that point, giving can promote hatred instead of gratitude.
Sometimes people give in order to exert control over others. For example, parents may give an allowance, so they can then threaten their disobedient child with cutting it off. Likewise, a nation may give "foreign aid" to other nations with the ulterior motive of influencing their policies and asking favors in return. People tend to be unhappy, when they feel that their freedom of choice is limited by others. Thus, if help is seen as an attempt to influence behavior, people will dislike it.
Finally, receiving aid signals some inadequacy on the part of the receiver – thus threatening self-esteem. For example, people often believe that students require help in their studies only when they aren't "getting it" on their own. Likewise, workers seem to need help in their jobs when they are performing inadequately, and people require therapeutic help only when their lives and relationships are not functioning properly. To some people, aepting help is an admission of failure – especially if others do not also seem to need such help.
Common sense seems to indicate that people would appreciate help most, when they need it most. However, psychological research does not support this "obvious" conclusion. People may reject sorely needed help for several reasons.
1. It may be viewed as very obligating. Your helper can later say, "You won't do this for me, even though I helped you when you were at rock bottom?"
2. It may strongly restrict the receiver's freedom of choice. Many poor people believe, "I have no choice – I must go on welfare and put up with all the demeaning rules and regulations."
3. It may be particularly damaging to self-esteem, making you feel inadequate. The person may think, "I'm aepting this help because I am really desperate."
Particular kinds of people find aid more threatening. Men often feel less fortable receiving help than women. Similarly, stereotypical feminine people (men or women) are more likely to be fortable seeking help, while stereotypical masculine people tend to be unfortable.
Cultural rules also affect reactions to receiving help. A 1981 psychological study noted that "people in Western cultures are taught that independence is a virtue and that dependence is shameful." Communal societies – where efforts and rewards are shared – seem to encourage both offering and receiving help more than do individualistic societies. In a 1981 study of a kibbutz (an Israeli collective farm), people who lived there reported that they would be more willing to seek help than did Israeli city dwellers. Their actual behavior backed this up, but only under certain social conditions. When given an intellectual task, kibbutz dwellers sought more aid, when it was presented as a group task. City dwellers sought more aid, when it was an individual task. This demonstrates that situational variables – along with culturally learned rules – can influence when (or if) people seek help.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even a free gift can have a high price.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To sum it up, although it may be godly to give, it is often unfortable to receive. The degree of disfort depends on the recipient's ability to reciprocate, the "strings attached" to the aid, how much aid is needed, and the recipient's background, gender, and personality. However, offering help in an emergency is unlikely to trigger any resentment. Usually the help offered in the normal "give and take" of everyday life causes the most problems.
This article is not written to make you feel bad about giving help to others, but to make you realize that giving might not lead to the appreciation you might expect. However, I do have a suggestion if you want to help someone that is not capable of repaying you. You can ask them to start a "helping chain." As a way of repaying you, ask the receiver to help someone else in the future.
"Some time in the future, even though it may mean that you have to go out of your way, give help to someone else who needs it. To reduce that person's obligation, tell them to do a similar good deed for another."
This can lead to several positive results. First, the receiver is less likely to have a negative feeling of being indebted. Second, like a "chain letter," you may start a whole sequence of helping behaviors far beyond your original act. Lastly, sometime in the future, this sequence of helping acts may e back to benefit you, when you really need it.

The value of friends
I am losing friends left and right, well, actually, only left. Some friendships, however, have been strengthened during this election.
When I was 6, I learned a song: "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold." Even as a child, I was a born raconteur, so I always had lots of friends. But, by the time I got to fourth grade, I was already getting into political brawls. Early on, I began living my politically active mother's joke, "My name, it opens some doors and closes others."
I learned to tone it down a bit by the time I got to college. As a theater major, it was fun in an acting class one day, when we each had to pretend to be another student. I chose to mimic a beautiful petite girl with long dark hair. She was my polar opposite, this former cheerleader-turned-hippie-princess named Michelle. She got a kick out of my impression of her. I thought it was cool that she could laugh at herself. We began a friendship that has brought us to the present day.
Yet we were always opposites. I am Roman Catholic, she is Jewish. I am tall, she is short. One rainy afternoon on campus, Michelle insisted on carrying the umbrella for both of us, (I don't think I stood up straight until the next day!)
Back then, she was as passionate a Democrat as I was a Republican. However, my friend and I still had something in mon that was more important than all the differences. We shared the same values and they showed up in a dozen little ways. That is why we are friends almost 30 years later. Furthermore, she had been moving in my direction politically before, but Sept. 11, 2001, brought us to a new level of munication. We have bonded even more during this election.
Sadly, I also have re-evaluated some other friendships as tensions increased due to the Kerry-Edwards demagoguery. This is the first time in memory that I've even been appalled by both spouses of the Democratic ticket. I rather liked Tipper Gore and Hadassa Lieberman. I thought they were sweet. And that's the way I used to feel about my liberal pals. But, now a Teresa Heinz-Kerry-like irrationality/Elizabeth Edwards snotty innuendo has infected some of them -- and it makes them unpleasant to be around.
This election may leave those friendships in its wake. The outlook is definitely not good for their Christmas card inclusion.
Sept. 11, Iraq, the demonization of Israel by Kerry's European fans, the beheadings -- all of the latter just doesn't seem to change the '90s mentality of those I know who are voting for the Democratic Party ticket. Like Kerry, they still seem to consider the United States' life-and-death struggle a nuisance. These liberal friends of mine are certainly not bad people, but deep down, they still don't get that we are at war with a greater evil than any of us has ever known. Combined with the extremism culturally on the left, these people are being more than a nuisance themselves.
The sobering fact is that these friendships are just too taxing (in both senses of that word). Those relationships have bee like old prom dresses in that they just don't fit anymore. There es a point where some associations can bee a fire hazard in one's closet. It may be time to do spring cleaning, even if the season is autumn.
Sure, friends can't agree on everything, nor are they supposed to but though I may think someone's a nice person, fun, etc., increasingly deep differences in our world view can't be ignored in these frightening times.
Three decades later, Michelle is no longer the shorter-than-me actress who insisted on carrying the umbrella as we walked to class, though she is still shorter than me. But she and I easily walk together under an umbrella of shared concerns. A few weeks ago we sat side by side at a most moving event celebrating Jewish and Christian support of Israel and each other.
Yet, we still live very different lives. My college friend has been married for 25 years to the love of her life, the mother of three and an executive in an entertainment corporation. And meanwhile her single free-lancing writer/actress friend, even after all these years still does impressions of her only in print now.
Happily, others have also e along to bee rades in arms this election. They represent a diversity in lifestyle that would warm any liberal's heart (although said liberal wouldn't warm our hearts). There's Genie the stockbroker, Cathy the casting director, Robin the mom of one of my former acting students, Sally the daughter of one of my mother's old friends and many others. Their e-mail messages and calls let me know that though other friendships may wither during this election, I'm hardly alone. They all have a point of view that enables us to skip to shorthand. ("Did you read Drudge?" "Yep!") All of these women make up my own personal non-elitist version of "The View, The Conservative Cut."
Yes, now those old children's lyrics resonate with a new meaning in "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." Regretfully, without shared values even after this tumultuous election of 2004, some friendships may have turned to a tin that rings hollow in these perilous times.
By the way, I recently chatted with one of those former Brownies who sang with me so long ago, She is a "security mom." She is voting for Gee W. Bush and she will definitely be included on my Christmas card list.

Friendship
Every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or o good friends. My friends will listen to me when I want to speak, will wipe my eyes when I cry, will take care of me when I am sick, and my friends will go together with me side by side through this journey of life.
As students, we could share more time with our friends. The friendship in our young hearts is pure, fresh and simple. I often feel very lucky to have a lot of good friends. Especially when I had Justin as one of my best friends. Justin was my English teacher from the USA. I met him in 1996 when I was a student who could only speak very little English. Justin was a vivid young man with a bright smile on his face, and he always had his special way to make the class active and attractive. He taught us English by telling stories, playing games, singing songs, and even dancing. I could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on Christmas Eve. It was so interesting and unfettable. Justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study English well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others' lives. I know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. Facing this valuable emotion neither nationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith, under-standing, and care. Justin is the best friend I have ever had, and I know I will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory.
Friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. It is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. It is also like a cup of tea. When we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink.
However, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. More and more people fet to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. They work hard in order to gain a higher position, in the society and to earn more money for their work. Of course, we don't deny that it is important to find a bet-ter place in our lives, but we wish more and more people could pay a little more attention to themselves and their friends. All of us have to spare some time for personal lives. We have to find the chance to express our emotion and love. When staying with our friends, we can release ourselves pletely. We can do whatever we want, we can laugh together, talk together, and even cry to-gether. I should say that being together with our best friends is the most wonderful moment of our lives.
As we know, we would feel lonely if we didn't even have a friend. But it doesn't mean we could depend on our friends all the time. There is a famous motto saying that “A friend is like a quilt with cotton wadding, but the real thing that keeps you warm is your own temperature.” It is really true. We have to work hard together with our friends, encourage each other and help each other. When we receive love and friendship, we should repay as much as we can.
Finally, let's pray together now that one day, all of us could find the person we want to find, and could enjoy a real beautiful friendship in our lives. Let's pray the flower of friendship be-een our friends and us would always bloom brightly in our hearts.
